Aladdin Jr. – Director’s Notes

First of all I want to extend a heartfelt thank you for supporting our amazing kids and the work that Momentum Collective is doing in the Alexandria, VA community. Though we are no strangers to mounting theatrical productions, this is our first time putting together a children’s musical. For the vast majority of the kids in this production, this is also their very first time performing on stage in a musical. We look at this production as a positive and strong step in our efforts to restart a children’s theater company through the city’s recreation department.

We started rehearsals at the beginning of September and we are very proud of what we were able to accomplish in 11 weeks. This was no small feat, and it would not have been possible without the support from the broader Alexandria community, parents, volunteers, and most importantly a group of 30 kids who did not have an ounce of quit within them. If you are impressed by the final product, just imaging what we can do with more time! We hope that the investments in costume, sound, and lighting will elevate the overall production value of the musical, and that you will not only be entertained, but inspired to continue to support our community work and love for the arts.

To the kids, I want to say well done! Thanks for staying still long enough to listen to your arts instructors on how to bring your best to the stage. Let this production be a grand first step towards a future in the arts, and I hope it encourages you and let’s you know that you can achieve anything you put your mind to. I leave you with this quote that has kept me going since my childhood:

The heights by great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they, while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

For this production of Aladdin Jr., we have reimagined Agrabah to reflect a true metropolis where people from all races, and cultural backgrounds can find common ground. That diversity is not only reflected in the casting, but also the choice of costumes and even properties items. It was very important for me to ensure that all voices get elevated in this fictional society, while telling the story of love, friendships, and self-determination.

The rendition of “A Whole New World” , includes the lines, “no one to tell us no, or where to go, or say we’re only dreaming”. This is a clarion call to everyone in the audience that we can be part of making the world we live in, a better place not for just ourselves, but for our children and their children. Let us ignore the naysayers, entertain big and bold dreams, and place the force of action behind thought to create “a wondrous place, for you and me”.
